SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma underscored the importance of abiding by protocols besides outlining the other measures and planning to counter COVID-19.

Attending the video conference conducted by the Prime Minister with Chief Ministers on Monday, Conrad said that large gathering should not be permitted and travel restrictions including inter-State movement should continue.

Economic planning and support to States should be accorded priority by the Central Government and the health infrastructure should be improved in the State and every State should have its economic plan keeping in mind its respective concerns, stated Conrad.

"The Centre should allow States to decide on defining the zones and containment areas," he said.

Conrad said that micro management of the situation is very important and each State should be allowed to take its own decisions.

"Meghalaya has its Economic Task Force constituted. We are pushing for a regional economic zone and we seek the Prime Minister's support to promote this," he said.

"Two different approach is being followed across the world – to close down or open; herd immunity, we are a big nation, different strategy will work at different levels, we need to think of a different strategy to combat this disease," the Chief Minister said.

"Elderly should be requested to remain indoors and we must protect our senior citizens. All States are having financial issues with debts and taxes. Therefore, financial support is required from the centre," he further said.
