Desperate Congress resorting to personal attacks: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma

SHILLONG: Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma has said that the Opposition Congress is so desperate that it is now resorting to personal attacks.

"The desperation level has gone to such a level where personal attacks have been made and words have been used which we don't expect from senior people and people at that stature," stated the Chief Minister.

Sangma pointed out that during his political career he has never seen "so much of desperation from the Opposition". He also said that it was sad to see the kind of extreme sense of desperation that is prevailing right now in the leadership in the Congress.

"I was, in fact, very much amused about a few days back when some Congress MLAs had called me; and they almost apologizing said that ''we are quite ashamed to see the kind of language being used by some of our leader," added Sangma.

He also alleged that the Opposition has been trying to topple the government for long, adding that on several occasions, the coalition partners supporting the NPP (National People's Party)-led MDA (Meghalaya Democratic Alliance) government have been approached and every time the Congress have been told this government will continue.

"It seems their focus is not about development of the people and issues of the people. Their focus is more on toppling and how they want to come back to power," added Sangma. While admitting that there are challenges, the Chief Minister maintained that in such a complicated situation all should work together.

He urged the Opposition, political leaders and the society as whole to rise above politics at this pandemic time. "The Opposition are playing games; but, they are not succeeding. Let's join hands to work together," appealed Sangma.

Meanwhile, on the comment made by his former Minister A.L. Hek that the State police has resorted to ''Taliban tactics'' in the killing of surrendered general secretary of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, the Chief Minister said that his remarks could be his personal reaction after he was removed from the Cabinet and replaced by his colleague Sanbor Shullai. He urged Hek to act in a "professional" and "mature" manner. The Chief Minister added, "He is an adviser to the Chief Minister; and, he should take the post seriously and advise the government in a proper manner.''
