SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has written to the Chairman, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi over the distortion of facts in a textbook about the cultures and traditions of the Khasi community.

The book titled as “ISC Sociology” for Class-XII is written by Manjir Ghosh and published by Kalyani Publishers.

In the letter to Chairman CISCE, the KSU has stated that the book presents entirely erroneous and flawed ideas about the Khasi customs, marriage and practice.

“Such untrue flawed ideas which have hurt the sentiments of the Khasi community are condemned by the Union and the Khasi community at large,” KSU education secretary, Raymond Kharjana said in the memorandum. The Union, while seeking the intervention and support of the Chairman, also requested him to discontinue the use of the book all over the ISC Boards across the country. “The book gives a wrong notion about the culture and practices of the Khasi community and degrades the character of Khasi women,” Kharjana stated.

The KSU also urged the CISCE to direct the Kalyani Publishers to halt the circulation of the book with immediate effect and further direct the publishers to issue a public clarification about the Khasi community in the public domain.

“Take legal action or any other action against the author Manjir Ghosh who has written the book which contains highly objectionable contents and false information about the Khasi community and that too without verifying the facts from reliable sources.

Author Manjir Ghosh has not only misspelled the name of the Khasi as ‘Khashi’ but also presented distorted facts about the community. According to the author, the Khasis are inhabitants of the Jaintia Hills district of Assam. The author further states, “Sometimes polyandry that is a marriage between one woman and several men may take place among the Khashi (Khasi).”
