SHILLONG: The Election Commission of India has started the distribution of election-related equipment to the electoral officials ahead of the assembly polls in the state. The state of Meghalaya will take part in the voting process which will be held in a single phase on February 25.

The Chief Electoral Official of the state of Meghalaya FR Kharkongor announced that the dispatch of the polling parties started on Saturday. Polling will take place in a total of 3419 polling stations distributed across 59 constituencies of the Meghalaya Assembly.

The official had also mentioned that the poling of one constituency, the Sohiong Assembly Constituency located in the East Khasi Hills district has been adjourned due to the untimely death of one of the candidates for the constituency. HDR Lyngdoh the former state Home minister and United Democratic Party candidate for the constituency had died due to a heart attack during one of the election rallies in the state.

The polling parties with the responsibility of holding the voting in the Rongcheng Polling Station of the west South Garo Hills district were the first team to leave on the morning of Saturday. This team will have to trek for a distance of 8 kilometres to reach the polling station from the last point on the road that can be reached by any vehicle.

The Election Commission of India also ordered the closure of the state’s borders with Assam as well as the international border with Bangladesh. This closure came into force on February 24 and will remain in effect till the evening of March 3.

"We have taken preventive measures to ensure a free and fair election in the State. Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed along the international bordering areas in the state," mentioned FR Kharkongor. While a prohibitory order was issued to prevent the movement of unauthorised people near the international border.
