SHILLONG: At the Soso Tham auditorium in the city of Shillong, the first Meghalaya International Film Festival officially began on Tuesday.

Adil Hussain, Sanjay Suri, Moon Moon Sen, and other well-known actors attended the event. Film directors Onir and Nathaniel Kharkongor also graced the occasion.

The Meghalaya Film Producers Association is organizing a 4-day festival that will feature a number of national and international award-winning films. Meghalaya's Minister for Art & Culture, Paul Lyngdoh, opened the event by declaring that this was just the first of many exciting steps for the state's film industry and that the government would make sure there were enough movie theatres to exhibit locally produced films.

He also voiced the sincere hope that Meghalayan movies will someday win Oscars, saying that "we have so many stories to tell the world." The MIFF is an excellent effort, according to CVD Diengdoh, director of tourism, because Meghalaya may be a great location for filmmakers.

So, it is possible to encourage film tourism. The founders of the MFMA, Commander Shangpliang, a journalist and filmmaker, and Engineer Shullet, welcomed the guests from the film industry earlier and urged the government of Meghalaya to give priority to encouraging filmmaking, which they claimed could be a fantastic source of employment for young people.

Adil Hussain expressed his joy upon returning to Meghalaya, the location of his film Lorni the Flaneur, which he had made there four years prior. He advised filmmakers to develop high-quality films rather than trashy ones, which he compared to unhealthy fast food.

Meghalaya Tourism, a Government of Meghalaya society registered under the Society Registration Act of 1860, and the Meghalaya Filmmakers' Association (MeFilma), a Shillong-based registered society composed of filmmakers from the state under the direction of Founder President Commander Shangpliang, are responsible for organizing the first Meghalaya International Film Festival.

With a gala launch on the evening of March 14 at the Soso Tham Auditorium and a closing ceremony on the evening of March 18 at the same location, the Festival will screen over 65 movies and documentaries over the course of five days.
