SHILLONG: Mawphlang legislator SK Sunn on Tuesday said that only flyovers will solve the problem of traffic congestion in Shillong city.
“Considering the experiences from Guwahati city, I personally feel that for a permanent solution to the traffic congestion in Shillong city, construction of flyovers at junction points may be the best alternative,” Sunn said.
He also urged the State Government to consider outsourcing the work of studying the problem, providing solution to the problem including preparation of DPR (Detailed Project Report) to agencies like ADB (Asian Development Bank) or JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) thereby ensuring procurement of fund for implementation.
“…in my opinion, State PWD may be the best line department to implement the projects,” Sunn said. He also criticised the move of the State Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling to build “skywalks” in the city.
“I am not convinced that walking the sky at Barik will ease traffic congestion at 3.5 mile, Rilbong, Anjalee Pump junctions,” Sunn said.
According to him, while his house is at Mawngap, 20 km from the city, but following the completion of the two-lane between Umdiengpun and Ladmawreng, the travelling time upto 3.5 mile Upper Shillong is barely 15 minutes, but from 3.5 miles to Shillong it takes nearly 25 minutes to an hour to reach the city.
The Mawphlang MLA also said that the measures adopted so far in solving the traffic congestion in Shillong are merely short-term solutions through trial and error methods.
