SHILLONG: A complaint has been lodged on behalf of Meghalaya Cabinet Minister James Sangma against unknown persons who have been impersonating him and attempting to dupe persons of money.

National People's Youth Front (NPYF) Shillong city president, Mayborn Rapthap in an FIR filed before the Officer-in-Charge of Laitumkhrah Police Station stated that the persons using the phone number 9679489220 has been asking people for money using various means, including asking to send Amazon gift cards and clicking on unverified web link in an attempt to cheat them.

The contact had Sangma's picture in its profile.

"Such an attempt, while criminal in nature, is also defamatory to the office of the Honourable Minister," Rapthap said in his complaint to the police.

It may be mentioned that last week, fraudsters posing as Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh circulated a message in WhatsApp from a number (6297079020) posing as Lyngdoh in an attempt to dupe people. The contact had Lyngdoh's picture in its profile and the message being circulated was pertaining to Amazon gift card.

The message reads: "Are you familiar with the Amazon pay gift card? You can possibly get them from the amazon.in website as there are some listed prospects I am gifting them today. I can't get it done myself due to meetings and I don't have any of my cards with me. How quickly can you arrange these gifts cards because I need to send them out in less than an hour. I would provide you with the type of gift cards and the amount of each. I will reimburse you before the end of the day (sic)."
