SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment has expressed their satisfaction over the ongoing investigation of the Phulbari gang rape case.

The committee members were briefed about the case, wherein a 16-year-old girl was gang raped by three men in West Garo Hills's Phulbari, by West Garo Hills SP Raghavendra Kumar.

Chairperson Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh said that she was pleased with the progress but added that she won't comment further since investigation is still underway.

The committee also urged Ri Bhoi Police to fast track investigation on the rape case and vandalism of the victim's residence in Jirang.

Ampareen informed that the committee will hold an internal meeting on 24th of this month to review matters brought before the committee with regards to the economic empowerment of women in all schemes prepared by the Meghalaya State Skill and labour department.

She further added that matters like issuing of pending ration cards to women will be discussed.

"We have also decided to enquire from the Chief Secretary of the State of the Government of Meghalaya as to the status of issuance of AADHAR in the state," she said.
