SHILLONG: The the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly unanimously approved the imposition of Governor's Rule in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on Thursday, the first day of the five-day Autumn session of the House.

The approval for imposition of Governor's Rule in GHADC by a resolution followed the October 16 notification. It cited the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and restricted the State government to hold elections to the Council.

The Governor had assumed charge of the Council on October 19.

The resolution that referred to the imposition of Governor's Rule right from October 19 reads, "The House hereby approves the order made vide Notification No DCA.1/2020/146 dated 16 10 2020 by the Governor under sub paragraph (2) paragraph 16 of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India."

According to the Assembly approval, the GHADC will be under the ambit of the Governor for a period of six months.
