HSPDP for end to boundary dispute with Assam

SHILLONG: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has urged the Meghalaya government to immediately reopen the unfinished agenda and also find logical solution to the long-pending unsettled inter-state boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam before the government attain 50 years of Meghalaya Statehood.

In this connection, the HSPDP has also submitted a letter to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday.

HSPDP state president KP Pangniang said that the issues relating to the inter- state boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam is a long pending issue since the creation of the State of Meghalaya.

“Successive State Governments have taken all possible steps to resolve the boundary dispute through dialogue between the two State since the last 47 years but till date there is no sign of a solution,” he said.

He said that moreover, the government had maintained peace and tranquillity in the area and the disputed area has been placed under the so called “Status Quo”.

“Furthermore, our State Government has also provided developmental activities in the area. The pending issue will continue to cause immense hardships, economic dislocation and breakdown of law and order,” he said.

It may be mentioned here that the Central Government has reiterated and advised both the State Governments to settle the dispute mutually and amicably. Recently, the Union Home Minister has announced that the inter-state border issue in the Northeast will be settled within two years.
