SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council of Raidnongtung Circle (HYC-RNC) has demanded the immediate halt to the proposed move for selling lands at Umsohphoh and lumlaru villages under Raidnongtung Circle to the Border Security Force (BSF). The HYC-RNC members led by its president Hercules Suting also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Ri-Bhoi district in this regard.

The HYC-RNC has pointed out that the presence of security forces in various villages and areas in the State has caused plenty of inconveniences to the public.

“We have found that in many of these areas where land has been acquired by the security forces they have been turned into prohibited or restricted areas; and this has greatly caused problems to the local people residing near those places,” Suting stated.

He further said that “once land has been owned by the security forces that land will be changed into a Cantonment area; and it will neither fall under the purview of the district council nor under any other traditional institutions.

“We have recently received information that a few individuals at Raidnongtung have decided to sell their lands — which falls under Raid Nongtung — to the BSF. This will create problems for the local residents of the area and the acquired land will be turned into a Cantonment area,” he said.

Hence, the HYC-RNC demanded that the Deputy Commissioner should immediately put a halt to the sale of land in the area to the BSF.
