SHILLONG: The Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) has raised its concern over the rising cases of COVID-19 in the State. In this connection, the Synjuk has also submitted a letter to the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
"We are concern over the sudden spike of COVID-19 cases within the State in the past few days. The recent incidents regarding the wedding that took place on the 27th June, 2020 at Greenwood Resort, Khanapara has left the masses speechless and one can only wonder how 40+ people from Shillong attended the ceremony with passes issued for 5 persons only," said SNSBH general secretary RL Blah.
He added that what is more surprising is why were they even allowed to hold a ceremony in Khanapara when Guwahati city was already declared a red zone area; and why were necessary details of the venue (health status of staff, past cases if any, etc) not enquired before-hand; and more importantly how were they permitted to hold another reception in Shillong (02.07.2020) within a four day span of returning from Khanapara? Regrettably, these questions indicate certain lapses on the part of the Government and the departments concerned.
"All these simple but important details could have prevented the current situation in the State," he said. Blah further said that the wedding incident is an eye opener to the insensitive, selfish and careless mentality of people and families who risk and endanger other peoples' lives just so they can experience a sort of normalcy in their lives. This is becoming a trend in our State, where the affluent society enjoys unrestricted and unchecked movement whereas the impoverished struggles to maintain a decent household in this pandemic.
"In the light of these recent developments, the SNSBH strongly condemns the irresponsible behaviour of such citizens of the State who are answerable for the rising cases of this deadly virus and the sleepless nights they have caused to one and all. We firmly urge the Government to bring these defaulters to task and impose harsh punishments and fines upon them for breaking protocols and guidelines set forth by the State. Furthermore, the Government should consider adopting stringent measures and issue warnings that any future offender will be dealt with the severe repercussions," he added.
