SHILLONG: Ïewduh, the largest commercial hub in Meghalaya, opened partially on Monday.

It may be mentioned that last week the State government has allowed the reopening of the market after a period of nearly three months.

However, the government allowed the reopening of only 1222 shops located inside the market on rotational basis.

On a given day only 30-33 percent of the 1222 will be allowed to open.

The shops which have been allowed to open have been allotted alphabetical arrangements – A, B, C.

Each shops shall open for two days a week from Monday to Saturday, from 8 am to 6 pm.

The shops that were allowed to open are those dealing in footwear, clothes, plastics, books, utensils, blacksmith, bamboo baskets, local rice, rice, turmeric, fruits, eggs, chicken and second hand goods.

During the first day, there was a substantial footfall of people in the market.

The police of the Syiem of Mylliem and the enforcement wing of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council were seeing trying to regulate the shops and also ensure due compliance to the advisories of the Health department.

As per the protocol, people over the age of 65 years, children below 10 years and pregnant women are not allowed to visit the market.

Apart from using face masks those who come to the market are to wash their hands properly in public hand washing areas installed for the purpose.

People with temperatures and cough will not be allowed to enter the market.

"No one is to spit or touch railings and walls inside the market," the protocol stated.

The protocol also has disallowed gathering of people inside the market and those who enter should maintain social distancing of at least 1.5 meters.

Meanwhile, barber shops and beauty salons also reopened in the city on Monday since the lockdown.
