SHILLONG: More than 1, 800 employees of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) on Thursday started their indefinite strike as a mark of protest against the Council's failure to release their salary for the past many months.
"We have decided to go for an indefinite strike from today till the JHADC authority releases our pending salary for more than seven months," JHADC-SA president Johnson Pohrmen said.
He added that the JHADC Executive Committee led by Thombor Shiwat decided to release only one month's salary yesterday after coming to know about the decision of the employees.
"However, we decided to reject any invitation by the Executive Committee for discussion on this issue as we do not want to fall for their false promises again and again," Pohrmen said.
It may be mentioned that the decision to carry out the protest was taken by the employees under the banner of the JHADC Staff Association on Wednesday.
The expenditure incurred by the JHADC under the 'salary' head is Rs 7 crore per month.
