SHILLONG: Dr Mukul Sangma -- former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and senior Congress leader has said that the Opposition party has been demanding an independent judicial inquiry similar to the demands made by people. "In fact the demand has always revolved around an inquiry which is independent," Dr. Sangma said.
The leader of Opposition also questioned as to how subordinates of the top police officers will answer to queries when their seniors are still in office.
"If the probe has to be independent, it has to be really independent. How will you ensure that it is independent, now? If the allegations revolve around the top officials, will you expect the enquiry to be independent and that too if top officers against whom the allegations are directed are still in the office?" posed the Opposition leader.
He added that during the course of judicial inquiry, a number of police personnel of lower ranks will have to be questioned. "Will they be really free to speak and share the truth? All those things are required to be understood," said Sangma.
It may be mentioned that the 'Sur Ki Nong Mawlai' (Voice of Mawlai) a conglomerate of 11 social organisations and pressure groups has demanded the suspension of the police officers involved in the raid on the residence of ex-HNLC militant, Cherish S Thangkhiew on August 13.
