SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Narpuh circle, has expressed their opposition towards the proposed public hearing schedule to be held on January 30 at Brichyrnot village for the proposed expansion of mining lease and mines by Star Cement Ltd. In this connection, the union leaders also met and submitted a memorandum to the member secretary of Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), Arden Lumpyngngad.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, KSU Narpuh circle president, KS Suchiang said, “We have expressed our strong opposition to the public hearing and to the expansion of mining lease by Star Cement Ltd at the property located at Brichyrnot village having an area of about 43.051 hectare.
He said the objection is due to the fact that proposed expansion is a forest area near Narpuh wildlife sanctuary and also near the Lukha river and allowing Star Cement to expand it’s mining lease will only cause more destruction to the environment.
“If the public hearing goes ahead as scheduled, then the union will be forced to take up the matter with the National Green Tribunal (NGT),” he said.
