Khasi Students Union Leader Ferdynald Kharkamni Arrested at Ri Bhoi

SHILLONG: The president of the North Khasi Hills unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) Ferdynald Kharkamni was finally arrested on Monday after evading arrest for more than a month. A look-out notice was issued to Kharkamni who had barged into the Umiam Police Station and assaulted the Officer-in-Charge and another head constable on October 15.

An FIR was lodged against him; and soon after that he absconded and evaded police arrest. He was arrested from Mawroh village, Ri Bhoi district at around 4 pm on Monday and is presently under Police custody, confirmed the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi District C Syrti, adding that the student leader will be forwarded to the Court on Tuesday.

Today’s arrest came 24 hours after the State Home Minister James K Sangma had stated that he will be arrested soon. According to sources, besides other Sections of the IPC which deals with assault, Section 353 will be charged against the leader for assaulting a public servant on duty.
