SHILLONG: As the indigenous Khasi people avoid discussing the crux of various problems afflicting its society, the issues are lingering. Stating thus on Wednesday, former legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit pointed out, "We need to debate the truth (affecting the Khasi society); but many times, we avoid discussing these issues."

He also said that the platform of 'IadaiaKaRi' (which means 'Protect The Land') will take this process forward by calling "a spade a spade". He also informed that the 'IadaiaKaRi' movement started by him last year would gain momentum in 2021. He stated that the pace of the movement had to be abruptly halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Basaiawmoit added, "Whenever the community encounters difference of opinion on any subject, such issues are swept under the carpet. But every time, the cracks keep on resurfacing because we don't want to address the crux of the matter."

Basaiawmoit pointed out, "It is high time that the Khasis accept the hard fact that they are divided. The Khasis has a history of being divided."

He also said that the platform 'IadaiaKaRi' needs to put out in public domain the present situation of the Khasis as a community and what are its weaknesses.

Stating that the Khasis, as a community, are interacting with the outside world more often, Basaiawmoit added, "We need to look inside and find out our weaknesses so that we can improve for the benefit of the future generation."
