Knife-Surrender rally organized to protest ex-HNLC leader Cheristarfield Thangkhiew's killing

SHILLONG: A conglomeration of NGOs under the banner of 'Sur Ki Nong Mawlai' staged a programme to surrender knives in front of the gate to the Main Secretariat building here on Friday.

This incident happened while the first day of the Autumn session of the legislative assembly was in session around 11am. The people personal on guard duty at secretariat building were also taken by surprise.

The delegation also shouted slogans demanding the removal of three high-ranking police officer allegedly involved the the operation on August 13, which led to the demise of former HNLC leader Cheristarfield Thangkhiew.

It may be mentioned that the knives were collected during the recent knife-surrender rally at Mawlai. The knives were deposited in a surprise move intended to ridicule the police version that the former HNLC leader had challenged the police with a knife resulting in the firing on August 13.
