SHILLONG: Keeping in tune with the fiftieth year of Statehood, Sanbor Shullai, Minister Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Arts & Culture, Home, Labour, Department of Prisons and Correctional Services, have taken the initiative to recognise the services of different personalities of Shillong for their contribution to the society.

In a similar gesture, a bust of the Late Dhyanada Charan Sharma, popularly known as Bah Dhan among the indigenous people, was erected on 29th October 2022 near his residence, Kench's Trace Shillong by Sanbor Shullai and Minister, in collaboration with the Raid Laban Sports, Social & Cultural Organization.

Some of the prominent speakers who recollected the late Sharma's contributions to society in particular and humanity at large were Air Comdr. Iqubal Hussain Hazarika, retd., Dr V. K. Mishra Director, ICAR, Umaim, Shantanu Pujari, Chairman AIDC, Krishna Dasgupta from AIR Shillong and Jayanta Sharma.

The minister, while elaborating on the reason for deciding to instil a bust of the late Sharma Ji, mentioned that it was important for the present generation to know about the selfless contributions made by the elders. Shullai emphasized the real motto of secularism and mentioned how late Sharma not only preached but practised it in the true sense. He also mentioned how Sharma was involved with all communities of Shillong.

He mentioned some of Late Sharma's contributions to Society since 1947, especially his initiation in getting the present Civil Hospital's land released from the Cantonment Head Quarters by mentioning it to Pandit Nehru, the PM during one of his official visits to Delhi. He was also one of the initiators of the present Electric Crematorium of Shillong, apart from being actively associated with the Laban Namghar, Shillong for over 70 years and was the president for more than 20 years. Late Sharma also had active involvement with organizations like Aurobindo Institute of Cultural Centre, the orphanage at Shillong Hindu Mission, Central Puja Committee, and Vivekananda Kendra, to name a few, till the age of 90, a press release said.
