SHILLONG: Independent MDC from Nongthymmai constituency Latiplang Kharkongor was elected as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) after former CEM Teinwell Dkhar, a candidate of the UDA, withdrew his candidature for the CEM post.
Dkhar was forced to withdraw after the 14 MDCs supporting the UDA were not present when the election of the new CEM was held.
KHADC Chairman Pynshngain N Syiem formally announced the election of Latiplang Kharkongor as the new CEM of the council.
Syiem also told the House that he has decided to go ahead with the election of the CEM, since Dkhar informed about his decision to withdraw from the contest only after the session has commenced.
He said that as per rules, he (Dkhar) should have informed about his decision before the sitting of the House.
The UDA has the support of 14 MDCs while the newly formed United People’s Forum (UPF) has 15 MDCs.
It may be mentioned that the UDA is having a separate meeting now. The UDA withdrew as they know that they will be defeated.
Meanwhile, members of the UDA, after the CEM was elected, sought the intervention of the State Government by meeting Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
