SHILLONG: The Meghalaya SLSA (State Legal Services Authority) in collaboration with the Lamjingshai Manbha Foundation and the Shamakami, Shillong organized a legal awareness programme on transgenders and their legal rights on occasion of the 'Pan India Awareness & Outreach Programme' as a part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' at the premises of the 'Shillong Law College', here on October 6.

The programme started with a welcome and keynote address from TTM Sangma, OSD, Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority who stressed upon the rights of transgender guaranteed under the Constitution of India, the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 and rulings of the Supreme Court & Delhi High Court regarding rights of transgender persons and the LGBTQIA community.

The other resource person was R Subba, Founding Member, Shamakami who spoke about the Rights of Transgender, issues faced and stigma related to being associated with LGBTQIA community.

Thereafter there was a session on sharing of experience by K Tron, community leader on living in the society, discrimination and problems faced as a person of the third gender/community.

The programme concluded with the 'Vote of Thank's from S Phanwar, Programme Manager, Lamjingshai Manbha Foundation.

After the technical sessions, dry rations were distributed to all the participants by the National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM), Shillong along with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority.
