Major Heroin Bust in Meghalaya: Rs 9 Crore Worth of Narcotics Seized

SHILLONG: In a significant development, Meghalaya Police successfully intercepted and searched a passenger bus in the Ri Bhoi district, uncovering a substantial quantity of heroin valued at approximately Rs 9 crores in the international illicit narcotics markets. This operation was the result of specific intelligence inputs related to a heroin smuggling attempt.

The incident occurred when a night service bus, en route from Silchar to Guwahati with the registration number AS 24 AC 1152, was flagged down at a naka check post in Nongpoh. During the meticulous search, law enforcement officials discovered as many as 30 soap cases filled with heroin, totaling around 921 grams.

The seized heroin, estimated to be worth Rs 9 crores, underscores the magnitude of the illegal drug trade in the region. This successful operation also led to the apprehension of the bus driver, co-pilot, and an infamous inter-state drug trafficker, all of whom are now facing charges related to narcotics smuggling.

In a separate anti-narcotics effort, the North Garo Hills Police's Anti-Narcotics Task Force arrested a narcotics smuggler named Helial K Sangma and seized 3.4 grams of heroin from his possession. Helial K Sangma, a resident of Tura's Spring Hills, was taken into custody as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the area.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma commended the police for their successful operation, stating, "A significant drug bust! Kudos to @ribhoipolice for orchestrating a well-executed, intelligence-driven operation that led to the recovery of a huge cache of Heroin worth ₹9 Crores! 3 notorious interstate drug traffickers are apprehended." He further emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to creating a #DrugFreeMeghalaya and continuing the relentless fight against the drug scourge.
