Manpower shortage handicapping Meghalaya Police: Lahkmen Rymbui

SHILLONG: Meghalaya's Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday said that the Government is trying to do its best to stop illegal coal mining in the State, despite the constraint of shortage of forces.

Rymbui informed that the State police is facing a shortage of 1,800 police personnel which are posts of Sub-Inspectors and below.

The Home Minister said, "So with this shortage it is not possible for the police to do everything. But I appreciate they have tried their best and we will try to do our best to see that this thing is stopped," he added.

Rymbui also pointed out that whenever they get the information the police always rush to try and stop the illegal activities.

He informed that the Home (Police) Department have advertised to fill up 9,00-odd posts and the recruitment is going on right now.

"Again we will advertise for 48 more posts shortly. The MPSC is also in the process of recruiting of officers," Rymbui added.

When told that the NGT had said there should be deployment of Central forces to check illegal coal trade, the Home Minister asked: 'But at what cost? We are trying to do maximum of policing. So we are doing it and we will do it," Rymbui added.
