Mawlyngot benefits under Community-Led Landscape Management Project (CLLMP)

SHILLONG: Mawlyngot village in the East Khasi Hills district has benefitted from the Community-Led Landscape Management Project (CLLMP), which is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA).

Under the CLLMP, five activities were implemented in Mawlyngot village, such as construction of water filtration tank to cater to each and every household in the village, afforestation to improve the forest cover and prevent soil erosion, construction of an RCC check dam at Wah-ktieh, loose boulder bun to prevent excessive soil erosion and water loss during the rainy season, and a community nursery was set up but the soil was found to be infertile. For the infertile soil vermicomposting and planting of leguminous pea plants and mulching have been suggested to improve the quality.

The interventions under CLLMP have brought about numerous positive changes. Water is now available to all 41 households in the village, and the presence of a check dam and loose boulder bund have helped prevent excess soil erosion and water loss, especially during the rainy season.

Mawlyngot village is located about 45 km from Shillong in the Mawkynrew Block of the East Khasi Hills district. The village has a total of 41 households and a population of 201 people, where the rate of the male population is higher than the female with a ratio of 70:30.

Mawlyngot is famous for producing one of the finest teas in the North-eastern region of India.
