SHILLONG: Meghalaya Power Minister, James K. Sangma on Monday said that the department is trying to find solutions to the various problems plaguing the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). "The crisis in the MeECL was not born yesterday. The crisis has been accumulating over the past so many years. You cannot expect a quick-fix solution to the issues," Sangma told reporters.
The Power Minister informed that the department is working tirelessly towards finding solutions. Sangma informed that the MeECL has a lot of problems in terms of high AT & C (Aggregate Technical & Commercial) losses. He also said that if these losses were to be brought down then one would see that the revenue would phenomenally jump.
Sangma said that the Power department has improved its distribution network with the installations of new sub stations, and transformers. "All these will help in reduction of AT & C losses which will, in other ways improve the efficiency, and also improve revenue generation of the MeECL. Hence, the problems which have been there in terms of salary payment, are expected to be resolved," he pointed out.
He, however, reiterated that the problems cannot be solved immediately even as he pointed out that salaries is a big concern. "We are very much concerned. We are ensuring that the salaries are paid on time. I'm sure that the MeECL is working; but of course, there are problems," added Sangma.
On the allegations levelled by the Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma that MeECL is being used as a milch cow by the authorities, the Power Minister said that the former is trying to politicise issues and make them up just for the sake of having issues.
"We appreciate positive criticism and also constructive criticism. But these kinds of baseless accusations or allegations are a big waste of time for everybody," added Sangma.
He also said that there are many positive interventions of the MeECL over the past few months but these are not being appreciated by the Opposition.
