SHILLONG: The last date for withdrawing nominations in the state of Meghalaya is now over and Meghalaya is geared up for the assembly elections which are just two weeks away. The political parties have also stepped on the pedal for campaigns across the Northeast Indian state.

The Chief Electoral Officer for the state of Meghalaya FR Kharkongor announced the list of candidates appearing for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. He mentioned that a total of 375 candidates will compete for the 60 seats of the Meghalaya assembly.

The National People's Party, which was for the previous government in the state has decided to put candidates for 57 seats. Both Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party have decided to put their own candidates in all the 60 seats of the state assembly. The Trinamool Congress has also put their candidates for 58 seats out of the total 60.

The United Democratic Party has put in candidates for 47 seats. Voice of the People Party has decided to field their candidates in 18 seats while the Hill State People's Democratic Party has announced candidates for 11 seats.

The process of submission, scrutiny and withdrawal of the election candidatures was conducted successfully across the twelve districts of the state mentioned the Chief Electoral Officer of the state. "None of the 375 candidates with valid nomination papers withdrew today," mentioned F R Kharkongor after the ending of the time for withdrawal.

Out of all the applications received by the office, four nominations were rejected during the scrutiny process. Out of the four, three belong to the NPP and one to UDP. Out of the total 375 candidates for the 60 seats, 36 are women and 339 are men.

The latest Meghalaya electoral roll has a total of 2161729 names. Out of that, 1068801 are male and 1092326 are female.

There has been no information regarding any pre-poll coalition in the state.
