Meghalaya Budget Session To Start From 20 March

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Assembly's budget session is scheduled to begin on March 20 and end on March 28.

Speaker of the House Thomas Sangma notified the house about this on Tuesday. Out of the eight days, he said that five days will be used for official government business and two days for private member's business.

On the third day of the session, the CM—who also holds the finance portfolio—would submit the whole state budget. The deputy speaker of the house would also be chosen during the meeting.

The Speaker declared he would be looking for candidates to fill the position. The issue of identifying the assembly's opposition, nevertheless, is unclear. Both the Congress and the Trinamool Congress have petitioned the Speaker to be acknowledged as the major opposition, but neither party has more than five members combined.

Having at least 10 members in the 60-member House is a requirement for being recognised as the main opposition. Sangma stated that he was discussing the matter with his legal staff and that a decision would be made soon.

He also stated that the other political group, Voice of the People's Party, which has four members, has not applied. In the interim, the Speaker visited the Mawdiangdiang construction site for the new assembly building.

According to Sangma, he has requested that the second phase of development get started at the same time as the assembly's main building. Particularly after the building's dome collapsed last year, work on the assembly was put on hold.

According to Sangma, he has instructed employees engaged in the construction process to remove the dome's debris within 15 days, starting from Tuesday. He added pledged action if any faults in the construction of the structure are brought to his notice.

"I will strive to complete the construction of the structure as quickly as feasible," he continued.
