SHILLONG: The State Public Transport Services (STPS) are plying in Shillong city without adhering to the COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). While the local cabs are being penalized for any violation of the social distancing norms, questions are being raised as to how the STPS buses and cabs are allowed to carry passengers beyond the allowed capacity.
Officials of the department have no answer. When asked, they said that they are unaware of such breaches. This is despite the fact the violations are taking place right in the heart of the capital city.
The bus drivers and handymen also feigned ignorance about the SOP norms. They simply stated that they are simply doing their job. "We are told about social distance but we cannot stop people rushing in," stated a driver.
