SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cabinet approved a proposal to upgrade the Mairang civil sub-division to a full-fledged district on November 5.

It will be called Eastern West Khasi Hills district, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said.

Currently, Mairang is now a sub-division under the West Khasi Hills district.

"Proposal to upgrade the Mairang Civil Sub-Division to a full-fledged district has been approved by the Cabinet today. Happy to announce that the new district will be named Eastern West Khasi Hills and will be inaugurated on 10th Nov 2021," Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Twitter.

Further questioning about the expenditure for the new district, Tynsong said the government has instructed the department concerned to work out all details, and this will be reflected in the state budget next year.

The creation of the new district will ensure that administration will remain closer to the people besides implementation of various schemes will also be more effective, he added.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has also decided to cut Value-Added Tax (TAX) on petrol and diesel by Rs 5.20 per litre each. The decision was taken in a state government's cabinet meeting.

The centre on Tuesday announced a reduction in exercise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and 10 respectively. Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tysong reminded that the state government in February had already slashed VAT on petrol from 31.62 per cent or Rs 17 per cent litre to 20 per cent and from 22.59 per cent or Rs 12.50 per cent on diesel.
