Meghalaya Cabinet: Non-Resident Garos No Longer Eligible To Apply for Govt Jobs

SHILLONG: The Office Memorandum (OM) of the Personnel Department regarding Reservation Policy and Reservation Roster was changed by the Meghalaya Cabinet on June 27.

Ampareen Lyngdoh, a cabinet minister and government spokesperson, announced the modification, which modifies the requirements for some job categories in the state.

Notably, non-resident Garos will no longer be permitted to apply for jobs in Meghalaya, and changes have also been made to the district-level reservation procedures for candidates and candidates with disabilities.

Taking on twitter, CM Conrad Sangma informed that, "The cabinet has also modified OM issued in 1974 with regards to the vacancies reserved for Garo categories, henceforth, the vacancies that arise for the Garo category will be filled by candidates from Garo candidates from within the State. The earlier OM had allowed Garos from outside the State to fill the vacancies."

The allocation of reservation points has undergone significant adjustments as a result of the Cabinet's amendment to the OM of 2020 addressing the reservation roster for people with impairments.

The reservation for people with impairments will be determined as per specific spots on the reservation roster with the issuing of the new OM on June 14, 2023. As a result, the prior OM regarding the list of reservations for people with impairments will no longer be relevant.

Additionally, the 1972 memorandum that based the number of positions advertised for Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Scheduled Castes (SCs) on a cap of nine or less is no longer applicable. Instead of being constrained by the amount of jobs published going forward, ST and SC job openings will follow the roster point system.

The reservation for PWDs has now been fixed as per a specific place in the reservation roster, according to a third OM from 2020 on the reservation roster for people with disabilities. The prior OM will no longer be applicable as a result of the revision.

A new clause for applicants applying for positions at the district level has been included as a result of the Cabinet's amendments to the Reservation Policy. The new rule stipulates that applicants who use the District Selection Committee must be proficient in the regional tongue of the district in question. This change intends to highlight how crucial local language competency is for applicants looking for district-level employment opportunities.
