SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday urged the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to speed up work on the Baljek Airport at Tura, West Garo Hills district.
The Baljek Airport was inaugurated by former President Pratibha Patel in 2008.
On Tuesday, Conrad inspected Baljek Airport with officials of AAI in presence of Home Minister James K Sangma and Advisor Thomas A Sangma. The Chief Minister hoped that chopper service will be operationalized and extension of runway will follow to allow more aircrafts to land in the future.
Meanwhile, AAI Regional Executive Director Sanjeev Jindal said, “If the airport is given to us, we will take over and work out how we can first develop it for chopper service, and then for Dornier or may be ATR aircraft under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS).”
