SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday made it clear that the pending power dues of the State to the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) have not accumulated during the last one year when the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance came to power.

During an interaction with the media in his office chamber, Conrad said that the dues accumulated during the last eight to nine years when the Congress was in power even as he informed that the total dues the State presently owes NEEPCO was Rs 550 crore.

According to the Chief Minister, the commitment which was made to NEEPCO on timely payment for that particular year should have been done at an appropriate time.

Making it clear that it was not possible for the State Government and the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited to clear the amount at one go, the Chief Minister said, “This whole thing has been build up and culminated to a massive amount of Rs 550 crore.”

Conrad also informed that at present the State Government was looking to cooperate with the NEEPCO on the power projects and other policies even as he said that the issue of clearing some of the pending dues was moving on a positive track.
