SHILLONG: Meghalaya recorded its 29th COVID-19 death when another patient identified as Gopal Chandra Baghdas also having co-morbidities died of the virus on Tuesday. The State's active cases now stand at 1,818, informed Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War. Baghdas (67 years) was a resident of the Jhalupara Cantonment area here.

Meghalaya also recorded 39 new recoveries on Tuesday taking the total number of recoveries to 2,190.

Dr. War informed that he tested positive on September 12 and was admitted to the Shillong Civil Hospital where he breathed his last at around 3:35 pm on September 15. "He had co-morbidities like Type-II Diabetes and hypertension. Cause of death is severe acute respiratory distress syndrome due to COVID -19 pneumonia," said Dr War.

The Director of Health Services also informed that Meghalaya recorded 172 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Of the new cases, East Khasi Hills recorded 74 (Armed and paramilitary forces: 21; civilians 53); East Jaintia Hills: 61; Ri-Bhoi: 23; West Garo Hills: nine (all from the armed and paramilitary forces); South West Garo Hills: two; North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills: one each. The district-wise breakup of the active cases are: East Khasi Hills: 1,187(Armed and paramilitary forces: 260; civilians: 927; East Jaintia Hills district: 203; West Garo Hills: 183 (Armed and paramilitary forces: 72; civilians: 111); Ri-Bhoi: 152 (Armed and paramilitary forces: 47; civilians: 105; South Garo Hills: 20; East Garo Hills: 17; West Khasi Hills: 14; West Jaintia Hills: 14; North Garo Hills: 13; South West Garo Hills: 10; South West Khasi Hills: 5. On Tuesday, West Garo Hills recorded 24 new recovered cases (Armed and paramilitary forces: 16; civilians: eight); East Khasi Hills: 10; East Jaintia Hills: three; Ri-Bhoi and South Garo Hills: one each.

Of the 1,17,518 samples sent for testing till date, while 1,13,184 samples tested negative and results of 298 samples are being awaited. The number of people who entered Meghalaya till date are 36,570.
