Meghalaya: Dawki Land Port Inaugurated to Enhance Trade Relations Between India & Bangladesh

GUWAHATI: The Dawki Land Port in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district was inaugurated by Union Minister Nityanand Rai to enhance trade and commerce between India and Bangladesh. The land port was inaugurated on Thursday by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar in the presence of Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.

The land port, according to Rai, is anticipated to promote the tourism and economic sectors.

The Dawki Land Port is located in West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, around 55 kilometres from the district headquarters of Jowai and about 84 kilometres from the state capital of Shillong. Tamabil, in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh, is the comparable Land Port.

The Dawki Land Port will serve as an important economic and transportation hub between India and Bangladesh, easing the passage of products, persons, and vehicles across the border. It will also make crossing the border easier for passengers.

"The cultural heritage of the two countries is similar, and both countries share a similar past," Rai said, adding that "with India's cooperation, Bangladesh is on the path of progress." He emphasized India and Bangladesh's spirit of fraternity.

On the other hand, the Meghalaya administration, led by the National Citizens' Party, has scheduled special aircraft to bring citizens stranded in Imphal, the capital of violence-torn Manipur.

Among the stranded Meghalaya people are 60 students from Manipur's Agriculture University and Food Technology Institute, as well as 25 members of Shillong's Lajong football club.

The special flights were organized in coordination with the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Director-General of Assam Rifles headquartered in Meghalaya, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and private airlines, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office.

By the afternoon of May 5, more than 25 people had arrived in Meghalaya via Guwahati. More than 60 students will be returned by special buses via Nagaland and Assam, according to Meghalaya officials.
