SHILLONG: National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong urged the people of Shella constituency to elect Balajiedkupar Synrem the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the October 21 by-poll.

It may be mentioned that Synrem is the son of late Dr Donkupar Roy who had represented the constituency for 31 years before he died of illness on July 28, this year.

“There is only three more years for the term to end. Why not give it (chance) to him to let him complete the unfinished work of Dr Don,” Tynsong said.

The NPP, the senior partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition, has decided to support the UDP candidate in the by-election.

Others like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF) have decided to field their own candidates for the by-poll

It may be mentioned that the opponents of the UDP which includes the partners in the MDA has hit out over the constituency being under-developed despite late Dr Roy representing the constituency for seven terms.

Reiterating that the people of the constituency should vote for the son of late Dr Roy, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “This is the term of Dr Don, but he expired unexpectedly mid-way and I feel the voters of Shella constituency, since the term belongs to him, should give an opportunity to his son to complete it because he is contesting on behalf of his late father,” Tynsong said.
