SHILLONG: Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday assured that the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) offices will not be shifted from Shillong to Guwahati.

The Meghalaya deputy chief minister, while replying to a query by opposition TMC MLA Himalaya Shangpliang, gave this assurance in the state assembly.

Meghalaya deputy CM Tynsong also said, "The intention of shifting the office of NEEPCO from Shillong to Guwahati does not at all arise."

Earlier, Meghalaya's Khasi Students' Union (KSU) spoke about the possible 'shifting' of NEEPCO offices from Shillong to Guwahati in Assam and had raised objection over the move.

The influential KSU had, in fact, written to union home minister Amit Shah over the matter, voicing their objections.

Earlier, in its letter to union home minister Amit Shah, the KSU had stated, "The management of NEEPCO, since March, 2020, shifted the important offices of the Corporation to Guwahati from Shillong."

The KSU further claimed in its letter, "It is matter of fact that the NEEPCO Management have hired a building at Guwahati on a monthly rent of Rs 5,30,479 …since March, 2021, despite NEEPCO having its own establishment at Shillong,"

"This is a kind of misuse of power and resources will add extra establishment expenses for the Corporation, which has to be borne by the common people," the students' union also stated.

The KSU has written to Amit Shah, who is also the chairman of the North Eastern Council (NEC), Union DoNER Minister and NEC Vice-Chairman G Kishan Reddy and Union Power Minister RK Singh in this regard.

The letter from Lambokstarwell Marngar, the KSU chief, urged them to take steps so that the offices of NEEPCO, so 'unceremoniously' shifted to Guwahati, are brought back to Shillong.

Moreover, Marngar said the members of the KSU many a time wanted to meet chairman and other directors of NEEPCO but they was informed that the officials were functioning from Guwahati.

He also alleged the then Chairman, VK Singh (Retd.) and Director (Technical) Hemanta Deka (Retd.) hardly attended the office headquarters ever since their appointment in the respective posts. "The trend is still continuing, Directors are occasional visitor at NEEPCO, HQ, Shillong," Marngar further alleged.
