SHILLONG: The employees of the 108 emergency services under the umbrella of the Meghalaya EMRI Workers’ Union (MEWU) are going for an indefinite hunger strike from Tuesday after stalemate over the implementation of the various demands.

President of the MEWU, Roipar Kharraswai informed that the indefinite hunger strike will be organized in front of the office of the GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), in Lawmali, Shillong at 10 am.

It may be mentioned that the 108 emergency employees are already in an indefinite strike since September 30.

The MEWU has also resented the recent move of the state government to issue a pre-termination notice to the GVK EMRI. It may be mentioned that last week, state Health Minister, A L Hek had said that if the GVK EMRI failed to perform within two months after issuing the pre-termination notice, further course of action would be taken.

According to Kharraswai in July this year the MEWU had given its management, two months time to fulfill their charter of demands but they were ever taken up. The deadline ended on September 23.

“In July this year when we had threatened to agitate over non-fulfillment of our demands, we called it off after getting assurance that our demands will be fulfilled. Giving them another 60 days to perform does not make any sense,” the MEWU president said. However, the MEWU went on an indefinite strike on September 30, after the employees’ salary for the month of July and August were deducted. The union also said that they have come to learn that salary for the month of September and October too will be deducted.

The Meghalaya EMRI Workers’ Union also reiterated its demand from the state government to start its own emergency cell to accommodate the 108 emergency service employees. The union has also resented the views of the labour and law departments who had made it clear that the problem is an internal matter of the GVK EMRI and its employees since the government had only signed an agreement with the company.
