Shillong: Meghalaya's former home minister, Robert Garnett Lyngdoh, passed away after a prolonged ailment here on Friday.

He was 62-year-old and took his last breath at his residence in Nongrim Hills.

According to reports, on July 11, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Bethany hospital in Shillong after his health condition deteriorated.

He was a senior Congress leader from Meghalaya and served two terms in the Laitumkhrah Assembly Constituency between 1998 and 2008.

He was also a former Vice Chancellor of Martin Luther Christian University and as home minister used to be very vocal against militancy.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, state Chief minister Conrad Sangma condoled the demise of the former minister.

''The fearless Shri R. G. Lyngdoh, former Home Minister of Meghalaya was a personality we all looked up to. Cheerful and witty, Bah Robert was a friend to everyone he encountered. Deeply saddened by the news of his passing. My deepest condolences to @ampareenlyngdoh & his family,'' he tweeted.
