Shillong: Meghalaya Minister of Social Welfare Kyrmen Shylla held a review meeting of his department after a major sex racket that targets minors was unearthed in West Jaintia Hills district three days ago. Shylla told The Sentinel that the officers have been specifically asked to find out the actual cause that made the underage girls land in the clutches of people involved in the sex racket.
AT least twelve people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the crime while eight underage girls were rescued by the police on Wednesday. The minister while expressing concern over the latest development said, “I have spoken to the officers under the ICPS to take good care of the rescued victims and to find out the circumstances that prompted or forced them into such activities”.
He admitted that the racket involving minor is a big slur to the image of the district and the State as a whole. “Personally and also as a minister, I feel those involved in luring or coercing the underage victims should be punished and tried by a fast track court,” the minister stated.
The Meghalya State Women Commission and the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights have already swung into action by seeking a report from the district administration and the police. Infact, the entire modus operandi of the accused was unearthed by a meticulous mission carried out by the West Jaintia Hills police.
