Meghalaya Govt Bans Killing and Slaughtering Of Dogs For Meat In The State

Shillong: The Animal Husbandary & Veterinary Department under the Meghalaya government has issued an order dated September 9, 2021, calling for a ban on all kinds of the killing of dogs.

The order states that the killing of stray dogs or domesticated dogs is a punishable offence under Section 428 and Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Also, the killing of dogs for meat is a violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011.

Therefore, the killing of stray dogs or domesticated dogs and slaughtering of dogs for meat is prohibited in the state of Meghalaya.

 Any person found violating this order shall be punished under Section 428 and Section 429 of the Indian Panel Code and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and/or any such other provisions of law as may be applicable.

This order was shared by the Government of Meghalaya on their official Twitter handle. The tweet reads, "#Prohibited for the killing of stray dogs or domesticated dogs and slaughtering of dogs for meat in the State of Meghalaya."
