The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) from Rongram in West Garo Hills in a bid to maintain necessary COVID-19 protocols, has urged the Tura Deputy Commissioner to cancel the proposed Wangala festival at Chibragre as of now. The GSMC has pointed out that the site where the festival is supposed to be organized is surrounded by residential localities and the Ganol River, which is the main source of water supply to Tura and Rongram.

The committee also said that it is not wise to organize a festival as the visitors might end up failing to maintain social distancing which is the most essential COVID-19 protocol.

''For six long months, the churches, schools, social gatherings were banned and we believe that it people will also support us in postponing the festival till the situation returns to normal,'' said GSMC in a letter to the DC.

The committee also urged to review the decision to allow the festival to be held at Chibragre. The committee further requested the DC not to open a 'Pandora's Box' amid the global pandemic and also to consider the postponement of the festival taking into account the recent declaration of the Rongram area as a containment zone.
