SHILLONG: The chief minister of Meghalaya said that his state has a higher number of schools and teachers compared to the other small Northeastern states on Tuesday. He said that the state also provides massive funding to the education sector of the state.

Conrad Sangma said that the state of Meghalaya has close to 14000 schools and more than 55000 teachers which are both significantly higher numbers when compared to the other small states of the region. He also mentioned that the state government spends almost Rs 2200 Cr annually on these institutions across the state.

He made these claims while addressing the centenary celebrations of the Jaiaw Presbyterian Higher Secondary School in Meghalaya and added that the expenditure is not enough and the state needs to strive harder to reach the list of the top-performing states of the country in terms of education.

Announcing a grant of Rs 20 lakh to the school for the expansion of the school building from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund, the chief minister said that an education commission will soon be set up in the state to look into all aspects of the education sector and ensure its development.

In a previous development, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government claimed that the decision on the reservation policy and implementation of the roster system in Meghalaya will be taken in its own time as procedure has to be followed. The statement was made despite pressure from opposition parties, including Voice of the People Party (VPP), which has called for a sit-in demonstration on May 17. MDA government spokesperson and Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh termed the matter as “very sensitive,” and that the government must “tread very cautiously.” She went on to add that the issue is being discussed by the government with its coalition partners. The state government is planning to take up the matter with political parties, NGOs, and student organizations when the Meghalaya chief minister comes back to the state on Wednesday.
