SHILLONG: The legal landscape of Meghalaya's judiciary is set for a transition, as Justice HS Thangkhiew prepares to take the reins as the Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. This significant appointment, effective from November 2, 2023, follows the retirement of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee.

The central government formally announced this development through an official notification released on Wednesday. The notification, made under the authority vested by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, reads, "In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 02.11.2023, consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Chief Justice, Meghalaya High Court on 01.11.2023."

Justice HS Thangkhiew has a notable history within the legal realm. He initially took up the role of a judge in the Meghalaya High Court on November 19, 2018. Notably, in November 2019, he briefly served as the Acting Chief Justice of the same court.

His legal journey commenced with the acquisition of an LL.B. Degree from Delhi University in 1990. Subsequently, he became a member of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh during 1990-1991. Recognizing his substantial contributions to the legal field, he was honored with the title of Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in August 2010.

Justice Thangkhiew's new role as the Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court reflects the continuous progression and stability of the state's legal framework.
