Meghalaya: KHADC Chief Warns Against Shielding Unlicensed Non-Indigenous Traders

SHILLONG: Pyniaid Sing Syiem, the Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), has issued a stern warning to Khasi women regarding their role in shielding non-indigenous traders who lack the necessary trade licenses to operate within the Council's jurisdiction in Meghalaya.

Expressing his disappointment, Syiem highlighted instances where Khasi women were asserting ownership of shops belonging to non-Khasis who were operating without valid trade licenses. This, he stressed, is a growing concern for the KHADC, and he implored the community to refrain from using the traditional attire known as "jain-kyrshah" to provide cover to these illegal traders.

During a recent inspection, it was uncovered that several non-Khasi individuals were conducting business activities without the requisite trade licenses. Syiem emphasized that the district council's regulations apply to everyone, particularly non-Khasis, and those without proper licensing cannot engage in any business operations.

In a fervent appeal, Syiem urged Khasi women to discontinue their support for these unlicensed traders and to collaborate with the KHADC in its dedicated efforts to regulate trade activities within the region. This call serves as a vital step toward maintaining transparency and legality in the local business landscape.

Syiem's warning underscores the crucial need for adherence to legal trade practices within the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council's domain. It emphasizes the council's commitment to ensuring that businesses, regardless of ownership, operate in accordance with established regulations. Furthermore, it highlights the role of the community, particularly Khasi women, in upholding these regulations and preventing any form of unlawful trade within the region.

Chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem's admonition regarding the protection of unlicensed non-indigenous traders serves as a critical message for both the Khasi community and the wider public. It signals the KHADC's unwavering dedication to regulating trade activities within its jurisdiction while urging all stakeholders to participate actively in upholding the law.
