Meghalaya Police Arrests 21 in Relation to Attack on CM

TURA: After the attack on the chief minister’s secretariat in Tura of Meghalaya which led to the injury of several police personnel, the state police has arrested 21 people in relation to the matter. The Trinamool Congress leader who contested against the chief minister from the South Tura constituency is also among the people arrested for the incident.

On Monday night, reportedly a mob of 200-300 people pelted stones at the chief minister’s Secretariat located at Dakopgre of Tura, West Garo Hills when the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma was in the midst of a meeting with the agitated organisation of West Garo Hills who were on a hunger strike in Meghalaya. These organisations of Tura have demanded a winter capital from the government of Meghalaya.

DGP Meghalaya L R Bishnoi on Tuesday mentioned that the incident was a “pre-planned conspiracy to attack the CM and damage him physically” as they had discovered the involvement of money and alcohol. And by the late evening on Tuesday, the state police had arrested a total of 21 people in connection with the incident. This includes workers of both the TMC and the BJP. On one hand, BJP is the coalition partner of the NPP which is in power in the state while the TMC is the main opposition party.

The Meghalaya state president for BJP, Ernest Mawrie strongly condemned the incident on Tuesday, informing that the party has constituted a committee to confirm whether its members or office-bearers are among those held, following which disciplinary action will be taken while mentioning that whatever has been done is their personal ideology and has nothing to do with the party.

Meghalaya Police mentioned that Marak was found to be directly involved in Monday’s attack, in which a mob hurled stones at the Mini Secretariat in Tura while Sangma was conducting a meeting inside the building with representatives of different Garo civil society organisations.
