SHILLONG: On January 3, the East Khasi Hills District Election Officer (DEO) issued a directive requiring all political parties to seek written consent before erecting any flags, banners, or signs throughout the city and district.
In this regard, a directive was issued on January 3 that stated, "It is directed that all political parties obtain written approval from the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Elections) prior to erecting any flags, banners, hoardings, or signages and that such flags, banners, hoardings, and signages are to be removed immediately on completion of the programme or as per the terms given in the conditions.
As per the instructions periodically issued by officials, strict adherence to the Election Commission of India's rules must be guaranteed. The ruling further stated that it had been observed that different political parties had erected banners, flags, hoardings, and signage around the city and district.
The political parties fail to remove the paraphernalia when their programmes are over, which annoys the general people, especially in city thoroughfares. Additionally, it said that party banners, flags, and hoardings had been attached to some public utilities without the necessary authorization, which could be dangerous.
Additionally, it was observed that flags and signs had been placed at government facilities, which is prohibited under the Election Commission of India's established norms and regulations. Without prior approval from the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Elections), East Khasi Hills District, or other Government authorities, the party flags and banners have been placed at numerous sites.
Recent reports claim that the chief minister of Assam has stated that the only way for change to occur in Meghalaya is through the BJP. "BJP has significantly changed the Northeast. We want Meghalaya to grow because we see other states doing so. We're going to deliver the PM's message to our constituents and to our people. We need change in Meghalaya, and it can only come from the BJP and PM Modi, he remarked.
