SHILLONG: Meghalaya on Sunday witnessed the worst day since the pandemic started, recording 18 COVID-19 fatalities. The State also witnessed 418 new infections taking the total number of active cases to 2,899. The State recorded 179 recovered cases taking the total number of recoveries from COVID-19 infection to 16,593.

Director of Health Services (MI), DrAman War informed that 14 deaths were reported from East Khasi Hills; three from West Jaintia Hills; and one from West Garo Hills district.

Of the 418 new cases, 275 were registered in East Khasi Hills; 57 in West Garo Hills; 26 in East Jaintia Hills; 11 in Ri-Bhoi; nine in East Garo Hills; six in South Garo Hills; five each in North Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills; besides four in South West Garo Hills district. Of the 2,899 active cases, East Khasi Hills is the worst-affected district with 1723 patients followed by Ri- Bhoi and West Garo Hills (353 each); West Garo Hills (234); West Khasi Hills (120); East Jaintia Hills (118); West Jaintia Hills (113); South West Garo Hills (78); East Garo Hills (53); South Garo Hills (50); North Garo Hills (36) and South West Khasi Hills (21 active cases). The total number of persons tested for the Coronavirus till date is 4,86,058. Of them, a total of 4,66,338 samples tested negative while 19,720 are confirmed COVID-19 cases.
