SHILLONG: Assembly Speaker and Mairang MLA, Metbah Lyngdoh inspected the landslide and flood-hit areas under Mairang and Nongstoiñ constituency of West Khasi Hills on Sunday. He was accompanied by West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Tableland Lyngwa, West Khasi Hills SP Herbert Lyngdoh, Secretary PWD (Roads) Pius Marweiñ, Chief Engineer National Highways Bruce Marak and others.
Various places under West Khasi Hills have been severely hit by floods and major landslides triggered by incessant rain this week leaving many areas — especially roads — in precarious condition with possible threats of their collapse.
At first, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh visited the landslide affected site at Sohïong on the Shillong-Nongstoiñ byepass. Later, he visited the landslide-affected places of Mairang, Kynshi area and Nongstoiñ Byepass road to Tura at Pyndengrei. The Assembly Speaker directed that immediate stpes must be taken for clearance of mud and slush from the areas, stating that if rain continues there are possibilities of flash floods.
Metbah also directed the departmental officials to find immediate solutions in regard to clearance of debris from the sites. He added that protective wall construction must be initiated at the vulenerable sites.
Flash floods in Sohiong has caused massive landslips, in Mairang and Kynshi some houses have suffered damages in landslides and the people have lost their cultivable lands. The Mairang MLA also directed the government officials to assess the damages and loss suffered by people in landslides.
He advised the government officials to prepare detailed reports and submit the same to higher authority. The Assembly Speaker also visited the Sohpian-Nongstoiñ road which has been sanctioned of an amount Rs 12 crore. Meanwhile, the officers has assured the Assembly Speaker to clear the debris in two-three days, so as to ease the commuters traveling via Nongstoiñ to Tura.
