SHILLONG: People of Shillong are waiting with bated breath for their first five-star hotel Taj Vivanta which is all set to be inaugurated after the Durga Puja celebrations, most likely on October 14.
Taj Vivanta Shillong which was earlier known as Crowborough Hotel will be not only be Shillong's but the entire Meghalaya's first five-star hotel.
Crowborough Hotel project was one of the most ambitious projects built on PPP mode using the Build, Operate, Lease, Transfer model in Shillong but due to various factors ranging from delayed building permissions to delayed talks of the government with hotel chains, the project stayed gathering dust over three decades since 1987.
The project got a new lease of life after the Tata group-backed Indian Hotel Company Limited(IHCL) took over the project in 2019 and completed it by the end of 2021 and now the Shillong populace is awaiting a dream they had been nurturing for three decades.
It was earlier reported that Crowborough Hotel, which has been rechristened as Taj Vivanta Shillong, will likely be inaugurated on September 27 or 28 but now the dates have been pushed back to mid-October keeping the Durga Puja festivities in mind.
The Taj Vivanta Shillong stands nine-stories tall and has 100 rooms divided into categories like Economy, Standard, Deluxe, and Suites. The hotel will also have its own in-house cafe and a banquet hall to cater to every need of Meghalaya.
The hotel also brings good news for the unemployed youth in Shillong as it would employ more than 150 people in various capacities in the hotel.
Meghalaya CM when asked about the inauguration of the hotel said, "They (Indian Hotels Company Limited) need five to ten more days to fulfill the requirement that the Taj group has asked for. Once everything gets sorted out, we are thinking of inaugurating the hotel by mid-October i.e. October 14 or 15"
